How to Choose Your New Microsoft Login
This information is for the School of Medicine.
Your new Microsoft login requires an authentication method — a way to verify your identity before you can access your account.
The best choice depends on how you like to work and the devices you use for your university email and other Microsoft apps.
Before you choose, keep this in mind:
- Windows, Linux, and Android users can use the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- Apple device users can use the Microsoft Authenticator app or an Apple Passkey:
- Mac only: An Apple passkey is all you need — no additional app is required.
- Mac and iPhone/iPad: You can use an Apple passkey, but you'll also need to install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your iPhone and set it up with your Stanford account. You can get the app through the Self Service app on your phone if your device is university-managed.
All three options in the table below are secure and approved for university use.
