Take Action for Lost or Stolen Devices

Reporting a lost or stolen device (LSD) is crucial to protect sensitive personal information and prevent unauthorized access to Stanford data.

Steps for reporting a lost or stolen device

Step 1: Report your device to local authorities

Report your missing or stolen device to the local authorities in the location where it was lost or stolen. (Airport security, local police)

Step 2: Check your encryption status & serial number

To check your device encryption status:

  1. Go to MyDevices (https://mydevices.stanford.edu).
  2. In the device section of the MyDevices dashboard, click on the device name to view your device’s profile.
  3. The status section of your device profile will display the encryption status.

Device serial numbers can be found on the left-hand side of the device profile page.

General information about your device, such as encryption status and serial number, will be required when submitting a ticket to the University Privacy Office (UPO).

Step 3: Submit a Help request to the University Privacy Office (UPO)

If your device is lost or stolen, submit a Help request to the UPO.

Select the following options:

  1. Under “What is the nature of your request?” select “Privacy Incident” in the dropdown menu.
  2. Under “What type of incident are you reporting?” select either “Lost/stolen device” or Lost/stolen device and paper PHI/PII (Protected Health Information/Personal)
  3. Proceed to complete the remainder of the form.
Step 4 (Optional): Remote wiping and device locking

To attempt remote wiping or locking actions on your device, follow these guidelines:

Windows Devices

  • There are no remote wipe or lock options for Windows devices except for Cardinal Protect Workstations.
  • If you misplaced a Cardinal Protect Workstation device, submit a Help request to seek remote wiping or locking options.

Mac Devices

  • Preferred Method: Locate your macOS device using Apple's "FindMy" under the account associated with the device's Apple ID, and then decide to wipe or lock the device.
  • Stanford Jamf Managed Systems: To wipe or lock your stolen Mac device, submit a Help request to the Jamf team.

To verify if your device is managed by Jamf:

  1. Go to MyDevices (https://mydevices.stanford.edu).
  2. In the device section of the MyDevices dashboard, click on the device name to view your device’s profile.
  3. Click the Management System tab to view your device's mobile management system.
