ChatGPT EDU is a version of ChatGPT designed specifically for universities, enabling Stanford to apply AI-powered approaches responsibly across teaching, learning, and research. This new offering from OpenAI is another accessible option for the community to deploy AI at scale — including the ability to build custom versions of ChatGPT for specific projects, courses, or tasks, and share them across university workspaces.

  • Higher message limits than the free version of ChatGPT

Designed for

The Standard tier is free to all active faculty, students, postdocs, and staff. (Visiting scholars, affiliates, fellows, and other affiliations are not eligible for the Standard tier. View the FAQ page for a list of specific groups with access. )

The Pro tier is available to all active SUNet IDs with a valid PTA.

Data security

ChatGPT Edu is approved for low, moderate, and high-risk and protected health information (PHI) data. This covers the vast majority of everyday academic, research, and administrative work. Your conversations are not used to train OpenAI’s models and include additional copyright protections.
