How to Set Up a New iPhone or iPad
University policy requires you to enroll your iPhone or iPadOS device in Jamf mobile device management if you plan to use it for Stanford activities on the campus network.
Jamf ensures your device stays up to date and secure enough to access the Stanford network, including applications such as your Stanford email and calendar.
How to enroll your device
There are two primary ways to enroll a device in Jamf.
Option 1: Automated Device Enrollment (ADE)
Stanford-owned devices purchased through Stanford procurement (university bookstore or Smartmart) will automatically enroll in Apple device management (Jamf).
How it works
- Unbox your new iPhone or iPad and turn it on.
- Follow Apple's on-screen setup assistant.
- Your device will automatically enroll in Jamf during setup.

Option 2: User-initiated enrollment
Personally owned devices and Stanford-owned devices not purchased through Stanford procurement are enrolled in Jamf via a user-initiated workflow, so you will need to download and install Jamf yourself.
How it works
- From the device you want to enroll, visit our Jamf iOS/iPadOS instructions.
- You’ll be directed to navigate to jamfenroll.stanford.edu to install and download the Jamf configuration profile.
Note: With user-initiated enrollment, you can remove Jamf yourself at any time (for example, if you leave Stanford or stop using the device for work).
