Jabber for Android: Installation and Set Up

The Jabber IM and Cisco Jabber apps work together so that you can use your Android device for instant messaging, calling co-workers, and collaboration. Jabber IM connects to your desktop instant messaging contact list so that you can chat your co-workers from your mobile device. The Cisco Jabber app connects your desk phone and mobile device so that you can make and receive calls anywhere.

These directions assume that Cisco Jabber has been installed on your work computer and that you can read email from your Android device. You can install the Jabber IM and Cisco Jabber apps in any order.

Jabber IM: install and set up

Jabber IM brings Jabber chat to your Android device.

  1. Connect your device to an on-campus Wi-Fi network.
  2. On your device, tap Play Store.
  3. Search for Jabber.
  4. Install the Jabber IM app.
  5. On your device applications screen, tap Jabber IM.
  6. Enter your account information: 
    • In the Username or Email Address field, enter your SID
    • Enter the password for the username you just entered
    • Enter the server address: jabber.stanfordmed.org
    • Select Remember password (optional)
  7. Tap Sign In. Jabber IM opens. The instant messaging contacts available on your desktop copy of Jabber are available on your app.

Cisco Jabber: install and set up

The Cisco Jabber app brings your desk phone to your Android device.

  1. Connect your Android device to an on-campus Wi-Fi network.
  2. On your device, tap App Store.
  3. Search for Jabber.
  4. Tap to install the Jabber app.
  5. If prompted for app permissions, tap Accept. Jabber is installed on your mobile device.
  6. Tap Open.
  7. The End User License Agreement opens. Tap Accept.
  8. The Cisco Jabber screen opens. Tap Begin Setup.
  9. The Phone Services Settings screen opens. Enter your account information:
    • In the Device ID field, in all capital letters, enter "BOT" plus your SID or SUNet ID. For example, BOTS1234567 or BOTLELANDS.
    • Enter the server address: SHC: 192.168.216.172
    • Select Autostart. Deselect all other options (suggested).
  10.  Tap Verify.
  11. The "Phone services are turned off over mobile data and non-corporate Wi-Fi networks," prompt displays. Click Continue.
  12. Jabber verifies your account information.
  13. Jabber is now set up on your Android device.
