Jabber for Android: Getting Started

  • In the event of an emergency, use a land line to call 911. Use of a softphone like Cisco Jabber to call 911 is strongly discouraged if another phone is available. Softphone technology may not provide the most timely or accurate location data and calls may be routed to the wrong emergency response center, or the emergency response center may make errors when determining your location. If you must use a softphone to report an emergency, be prepared to tell the dispatch operator your physical location. Stanford University is not liable for errors or delays in emergency response.
  • Note: it is not unusual to experience occasional loss of audio quality when using a softphone. For the best experience, use a USB headset and use a wired connection (Ethernet), if possible.

Jabber for Android has many of the same features as Jabber for other devices. Some features may not be available to all users. If the feature is not available in your department, its control icons are grayed out. This page assumes that you have already set up Jabber and describes some of the most common Jabber tasks.

  1. Make sure that your SHC Wi-Fi connection is active.
  2. Tap Jabber.
  3. On the Sign In screen, enter your SID and password.
  4. Tap Sign In.

Add contacts

The My Contacts list appears empty when your cursor is in the Search bar. Tap outside of the Search bar to see your complete My Contacts list.

Add a contact

  1. Tap Contacts.
  2. Tap +.
  3. In the Add Contact window, enter the name, SID, or email address of the desired contact. A list of possible matches displays as you type.
  4. Tap the desired entry.
  5. Set Add to Group or Add to Favorites (optional).
  6. Tap Done. The new contact displays in the assigned list.

Chat sessions

The chat session buttons and functions are similar to those on iPhone. There is no Group Chat functionality for Android at this time.

Start a chat session

  1. Tap the person's name in the My Contacts list or the Directory list, dial by name, or dial by number, then tap Chat.
  2. Type your message, then tap Send or press Enter.
  3. To switch from a chat session to a phone call, tap Call.

Join or end a chat session

  • When you receive a chat invitation tap Accept to join the chat session.
  • To end a chat session, tap End.

Voice calls

Voice quality over Wi-Fi cannot be guaranteed. Place and receive calls over a dedicated phone line when voice quality is critical.

Place a call

  • Tap the person's name in the My Contacts list or the Directory list, dial by name, or dial by number, then tap Call.

Receive or end a call

  • When you receive a call invitation tap Answer to join the call. Tap Decline to send the call to voicemail, or Chat Reply to start a chat session with the caller.
  • To leave a call, tap End.

Voice conferences

A list of call attendees will not display on Android. A Jabber for Android voice conference can include up to six people: five participants plus the host.

Start a voice conference

  1. Tap the first person's name in the My Contacts list or the Directory list, dial by name, or dial by number, then tap Call.
  2. Add/transfer/something or another.
  3. Add up to four more participants.

Receive or leave a voice conference

  • When you receive a call invitation tap Answer to join the conference. Tap Decline to send the call to voicemail, or Chat Reply to start a chat session with the caller.

Video calls

All video calls are person-to-person. The video call automatically becomes a voice conference when a third person joins.

Place a video call

  1. Tap the person's name in the My Contacts list or the Directory list, dial by name, or dial by number, then tap Video.
