Jabber for iPad: Getting Started

  • In the event of an emergency, use a land line to call 911. Use of a softphone like Cisco Jabber to call 911 is strongly discouraged if another phone is available. Softphone technology may not provide the most timely or accurate location data and calls may be routed to the wrong emergency response center, or the emergency response center may make errors when determining your location. If you must use a softphone to report an emergency, be prepared to tell the dispatch operator your physical location. Stanford University is not liable for errors or delays in emergency response.
  • Note: it is not unusual to experience occasional loss of audio quality when using a softphone. For the best experience, use a USB headset and use a wired connection (Ethernet), if possible.

Jabber for iPad provides many of the same features as Jabber for other devices in a single application. Not all features are available to all users. If the feature is not available in your department, its control icons are grayed out. This page assumes that you have already set up Jabber and describes some of the most common Jabber tasks.

  1. Make sure that your SHC Wi-Fi connection is active.
  2. Tap Jabber.
  3. On the Sign In screen, enter your SID and password.
  4. Tap Sign In.

Contacts

The My Contacts list appears empty when your cursor is in the Search bar. Tap outside of the Search bar to see your complete My Contacts list. If the list still appears to be empty, turn on Show Offline Contacts: tap Settings > Display, set Show Offline Contacts to On, then tap Done.

Add a contact

  1. Tap Contacts.
  2. Tap +.
  3. In the Add Contact window, enter the name, SID, or email address of the desired contact. A list of possible matches displays as you type.
  4. Tap the desired entry.
  5. Set Add to Group or Add to Favorites (optional).
  6. Tap Done. The new contact displays in the assigned list.

Chats

The chat session buttons and functions are similar to those on iPhone. There is no Group Chat functionality for iPad at this time.

Start a chat session

  1. Tap Chats, Favorites, or Recents for a list of commonly-used contacts, or tap Contacts to start a search, open your My Contacts list, or open the Directory.
  2. Tap a contact entry or dial by name or number, then tap Chat.
  3. Type your message, then tap Send.
  4. To switch from a chat session to a phone call, tap Call.

Join a chat session

Tap the chat entry in the Chats list.

Calls

Audio quality over Wi-Fi cannot be guaranteed. Place and receive calls over a dedicated phone line when calling 911 or audio quality is critical.

Place a call

Tap the person's name in the Favorites, Recents, My Contacts, or Directory* list, use Search or dial by name, or the Keypad to dial by number, then tap Call. Note: the Jabber directory is populated from your Outlook directory. If the directory is empty, contact your local IT support for assistance.

Receive or end a call

Tap Answer to join the call. Tap Decline to send the call to voicemail. To leave a call, tap End.

Conference calls

A Jabber for iPad conference call can include up to six people: five participants plus the host.

Start a conference call

  1. Tap the person's name in the Favorites, Recents, or Contacts list, or tap Keypad to dial by number. Tap Call.
  2. To add the next person to your call, tap More > Add Call.
  3. Call the next conference attendee. When they answer, tap Conference to add them to the call.

Join or leave a conference call

Tap Answer to join the conference. Tap Decline to send the call to voicemail. To leave a conference, tap End. The conference continues uninterrupted if the host leaves the conference call before the attendees.

Video calls

All video calls are person-to-person and begin with a phone call before switching to video call mode. A video call automatically becomes a conference call when a third person joins.

Place a video call

Place your call as usual. When the person answers, tap Video.

Receive or end a video call

Tap Answer to join the call, then tap Video to switch to video call mode. To leave a video call, touch the iPad screen to open the toolbar, then tap End.
