Why can I no longer access a file in Google Drive?

Monday, September 13, 2021

On Sept. 13, 2021, Google applied a security update that made file-sharing links more secure. This update changed the links used for accessing certain files in individual Google Drive and Google Shared drives. Read more about the security update.

To access previously shared files, you will need to request access. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the file.
  2. On the You need access page, click Request access.
  3. The owner of the file will get an email asking for approval. After they approve your request, you'll get an email confirming you have access to the file.

If you are the owner of files impacted by the change, you should have recently received an email from Google that includes a link to those files. You will also see an alert displayed at the top of your My Drive. If you have shared impacted files, you will need to reshare the files.
