Strategic efforts by the Mobile Device and Paging Services team led to significant cost reductions across multiple carriers.
After nearly a year of negotiations, University IT (UIT) is excited to offer the community significantly reduced mobile rates. Even better, these savings are available across multiple carriers, allowing clients to choose the mobile service that best meets their needs.
Remarkable savings and benefits
All 13,000 existing mobile lines were successfully migrated to new plans in December 2024 and are already benefiting from the lower rates. These new rates will bring $1.2M in annual savings on existing lines across the Stanford community, including Stanford University and Stanford Hospitals.
Alan Laver, director of Stanford Children's Hospital Technology and Communications, shared his team is already reaping the benefits.
"These efforts are giving us a better plan — unlimited data for all — at a lower rate, so it's a double win! We are estimating to save around 80K a year, and possibly even more, as our cellular usage increases,” Laver said.
Behind the scenes of success
UIT’s Mobile Device and Paging Services team, in collaboration with the Vendor Management team, successfully secured exclusive discounts and competitive rates from current mobile carriers.
The negotiations began in February 2024, led by Phil Ramsour, manager of Mobile and Paging Service Operations. Throughout the process, the teams remained committed to meeting client needs before finalizing agreements in December 2024.
“The negotiation process was certainly lengthy, and my team’s support was invaluable every step of the way," said Ramsour. "Their dedication played a crucial role in securing the best possible outcome. Once the agreements were in place, we worked closely with carriers to ensure a seamless transition for all 13,000 existing lines to the new plans.”
Additionally, the team recently reduced operational costs by automating billing and client reporting, allowing them to focus on these complex negotiations.
