What should I do if I get a new smartphone?
Around the holidays, some might be lucky enough to score a new smartphone! If you find yourself in that spot, be sure to review the important steps you might need to take.
Choose which one matches your setup:
New personal phone, only using for two-step authentication:
If you are simply wanting to use your smartphone as your two-step device or as a back up, follow these instructions for how to set up a smartphone for two-step authentication. Two-step authentication protects your Stanford account from fraudulent access, using two forms of authentication to verify your identity.

New personal phone, using for Stanford work:
If you plan to use your new personal phone for any Stanford work activity (email, messaging, productivity), you will need to enroll your device in mobile device management (MDM), according to university policy. MDM is free and is required for use of Moderate or High Risk Data on personal mobile devices. Enrolling a device in MDM enables specific security settings that are designed to help protect you, our Stanford community, and even beyond.
For easier navigation of certain sites and tools, you’ll also likely want to install Cardinal Key.
And, you’ll still want to reference two-step setup help and check out discounts available.
New Stanford work phone:
For Stanford work phones you might order and receive, be sure to follow the instructions for Mobile Device Services on ordering, choosing a phone and plan, activation, and other setup help.
