Stanford AI Tools: Latest Updates

In case you missed it: ChatGPT Edu, Google Gemini Enterprise, and Claude for Education were launched simultaneously on June 30, as part of a campus-wide AI pilot running through August 2027.

All Stanford faculty, students, postdocs, and staff with a SUNet ID have free access to these tools; affiliates have a paid option as well. For heavier workloads, discounted Pro/Premium tiers of all three tools remain available for purchase on a Stanford PTA or through a student account.

As fall quarter gets underway, here's how to get access to each tool through University IT (UIT), along with recent updates for all AI services. Full details, including data classification guidance for each tool, are available on the Approved AI Services Matrix.

OpenAI ChatGPT Edu

ChatGPT Edu gives you access to OpenAI's GPT-6 model for writing, research, and analysis, plus Codex for building custom apps, websites, presentations, and workflows. Access requires a short request form on the ChatGPT Edu service page. After that, you'll confirm your Stanford identity via SSO and agree to responsible use terms.

Two major updates for the Stanford environment:

• GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's new model for complex, multi-step coding, research, and document work, has been enabled for ChatGPT Plus and Pro.
• View current usage limits: Earlier this month, OpenAI resolved an issue that was preventing Stanford users from viewing their current usage limits in ChatGPT settings. This fix makes it easier to understand remaining capacity and when limits reset.

Anthropic Claude for Education

Claude for Education bundles Claude Chat, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork for teaching, learning, research, and administrative work, all within a university-managed environment built for academic integrity and data protection. Like ChatGPT Edu, it requires a quick request form on the Claude for Education service page.

Two key updates for the Stanford environment:

• Claude Cowork now includes a built-in browser. Cowork can use the browser to open and read websites, navigate pages, click controls, enter information, and complete supported web-based tasks as part of a workflow.
• Chat and Project sharing has been fixed. Anthropic resolved an issue that was preventing people from correctly sharing Claude chats and projects with others in the Stanford environment.

Google Gemini Enterprise

Gemini Enterprise activates automatically the first time you sign in with your SUNet ID through the Gemini Enterprise homepage; no request form is needed. It includes Gemini Notebook Enterprise (formerly NotebookLM Enterprise) for literature reviews, course prep, and grant writing. Gemini Enterprise also connects to Google Drive, OneDrive, Slack, and Microsoft 365.

Two significant features recently rolled out to the Stanford environment:

• Workflow Builder lets users create multi-step workflows and agents that combine instructions, tools, and enterprise data sources. You can run them on demand or on a schedule.
• Projects are now available in Gemini Enterprise. As with ChatGPT and Claude, Projects give you a dedicated workspace to organize files, maintain grounded conversations, and collaborate around a specific topic or body of work.

AI API Gateway and AI Playground

For developers and researchers building directly against these models, the UIT AI team performed an upgrade of the AI API Gateway in early September to resolve an issue with retrieving API key usage data. New models are coming soon to both the AI Playground and AI API Gateway in the weeks ahead.

Updates to AI Tools for High-Risk Data

In late August, Stanford's Google Gemini Chat and Microsoft Copilot Chat were approved for high-risk and protected health information (PHI) data.
