Cardinal Print Takes Flight to the Cloud

Tuesday, April 11, 2023

We’re taking the Cardinal Print servers to the cloud in the coming weeks. This is a big step forward, and we’re very excited. However, there will be some planned downtime as we prepare for the transition.

Here’s what to expect: the Cardinal Print service will be offline for four to six hours starting at 5 p.m. PST on Friday, April 28, 2023.

Let’s talk about the downtime

We’ve picked a time that we think will be the least disruptive to most of the community. But if you are affected, here are a few points to keep in mind:

  • If possible, it’s best to complete the print jobs in your queue before 5 p.m. on April 28.
  • If you are unable to print queued documents, no worries. When the service returns online, these items will no longer appear in your print queue; however, you can resend them to Cardinal Print.
  • We don’t expect that you’ll encounter issues after the planned downtime. Should you have concerns, submit a Help request, or call the UIT Service Desk at 650-725-4357 (5-HELP) if your issue is urgent.

More good things ahead

Moving to the cloud is part of a series of improvements designed to provide you with an even better Cardinal Print experience.

We’re upgrading all existing Cardinal Print devices — and have emailed departments about the deployment timeline for their group. Look for these new features to roll out soon:

  • New auto-suspend: If your print job is interrupted while printing due to a paper jam, lack of paper, etc., it will automatically be suspended instead of deleted. When you’re ready, you can resume printing by following these steps. (Please note, this feature only works with print jobs sent via a Cardinal Print driver.)
  • Enhanced security reporting: Improved capabilities to help us ensure we're consistently meeting the highest security standards.

Stay tuned for more announcements about what’s next for Cardinal Print.
