Adobe Illustrator: 7 Tool Groups for Cool Typography

This course covers Adobe Illustrator's type and modify tools for specific typography applications. By the end of this course, you will know how to bring your typography ideas to fruition and feel confident with Illustrator's type transformations.

This is the third session of the Stanford University Technology Training Adobe Illustrator Typography and Text Manipulation learning path proficiency certification. This learning path includes six sessions and a final exam challenge. In order to obtain your certificate of completion, you must attend at least three of the sessions in the learning path and successfully pass the final exam challenge.

Course Prerequisites

  • Have either taken the previous classes in the Adobe Illustrator Typography and Text Manipulation learning path, or have equivalent experience of the topics taught.

This course covers Adobe Illustrator's type and modify tools for specific typography applications. We will cover:

  • A variety of type manipulation strategies
  • How to effectively use the tool customization options
  • How to speed up productivity with helpful tools, like Eyedropper, Rotate Copy, and Touch Type
  • How to use type on a path effectively and fine-tune letters to the baseline
  • By the end of this course, you will know how to bring your typography ideas to fruition and feel confident with Illustrator's type transformation capabilities

Course Goals

  • Experiment with various type and modify tools
  • Learn unique techniques for the type and modify tools beyond default settings
  • Create a digital team name tag for you and two co-workers
  • Demonstrate your understanding of the course topics by passing the learning assessment

This course is for learners who would like a deeper understanding of Illustrator's type and modify tool's customizable options, and would like to learn fresh techniques.

You are ready for this course if you:

  • Know how to set up a new Illustrator document for a specific digital or print format
  • Feel comfortable navigating Illustrator's interface, using selection tools, and importing files
  • Know how to access and customize groups and libraries

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Recollect Illustrator's type functions and the best tool to select
  • Describe how to customize basic modification tools for a more sophisticated outcome
  • Demonstrate how to use the Type on a Path Tool
  • Differentiate between the modify tools options and use them creatively.
  • Re-design banal text using the hidden power of the Blend Tool
  • Manufacture a new look for a modern typeface by transforming and warping

This course has interactive exercises with demonstrations, and a typography activity that will be completed during class. There will be requests for participation and discussion, and handouts will be provided. Notetaking and questions are encouraged.

Technology Requirement: Have access to Adobe Illustrator on your device. Trial download information will be shared with enrolled learners before the start of the class.
