Support for Legacy Outlook for Mac Ending

On Oct. 1, Microsoft will stop supporting the legacy Outlook for Mac client on the cloud-hosted Exchange Online mailboxes. The majority of Mac users have already switched to the current version of Outlook and do not need to take any action.

If you are still using legacy Outlook (as shown in the screenshot below), we strongly encourage moving to the current version now to avoid any disruption to your email. The current version of Outlook has a more modern set of features, such as a fully customizable toolbar, search with natural language, and text prediction.

To help the Stanford community manage this change, University IT is working with Microsoft on a back-up plan to keep legacy Outlook functioning on Stanford-owned Macs until April 2027. We will communicate about this solution when it is finalized.

How to confirm your version of Outlook

If you are using legacy Outlook on a Mac, a Legacy Outlook button, toggled to On, appears at the top right of your screen. This button does not appear on Macs using the current version of Outlook.

If you have switched from legacy Outlook to the current Outlook, you can confirm this by selecting the Help menu. You should see a Revert to Legacy Outlook option in the drop-down menu.

How to switch from legacy Outlook for Mac to the current version

Within Outlook, select the Legacy Outlook button to toggle it to Off. Your email will then switch to the current version of Outlook.

If your macOS version number is less than 10.14 (Mojave), you may need to upgrade your hardware to move to the current version of Outlook.

To continue to access Outlook on macOS versions less than 10.14, you can use Outlook on the web, which works in any browser and needs no software installed. Contact your local IT support to discuss a longer-term solution.
