Coming Soon: A New Login for Your Stanford University Microsoft Account

Learn more about the updated login process you’ll use to access Stanford University Microsoft services — including your Stanford email in Outlook

Get ready — we’re transitioning to a new, more modern login experience for Stanford Microsoft 365 applications.

This update, supported by a platform called Microsoft Entra ID, will better safeguard your Stanford Microsoft 365 account and the valuable university data you work with every day. It also aligns the university’s technology with the standards already in place at Stanford’s hospitals, making it easier and safer to work with colleagues across the entire Stanford community.

The new login will be used for your Stanford Microsoft 365 account only. Your login experience (using your SUNet ID and password or Cardinal Key and Duo multifactor authentication) will stay exactly the same for all other Stanford services, including Google, Zoom, Slack, ServiceNow, and Cisco VPN.

What to expect with the change

After the change, you'll be prompted to use the new login when you access your Stanford Microsoft 365 account. This includes when you open:

  • Outlook: To access your Stanford Microsoft 365 email and calendar on desktop, mobile, or web (including webmail.stanford.edu and webcal.stanford.edu)
  • Teams: For chats and meetings
  • OneDrive: To access your files and shared documents
  • Other applications or websites configured to use Stanford Microsoft authentication

Here are the differences you’ll see with the Stanford Microsoft 365 login experience.

  1. New login screen
When you open a university Microsoft 365 app, you’ll be directed to a new Stanford-branded Microsoft login screen, instead of the Stanford login screen.
  2. Your username will be your email address
Your username for your Stanford Microsoft account will be your university SUNetID@stanford.edu email address. Your SUNet ID alone will no longer be valid for Microsoft logins.
  3. New verification app
You are already familiar with using Duo to protect your Stanford account with multifactor authentication. For Stanford Microsoft 365, we are adopting the tool designed specifically for this ecosystem (called Microsoft Authenticator). You’ll need to install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile phone or tablet. It will work alongside your Duo app, which you will continue to use for other Stanford services.

Rolling out in phases

To ensure a smooth transition, this update will be rolled out across campus in phases.

  • The School of Medicine is first, scheduled for summer 2026.
  • A timeline for other schools and units will be announced in the coming months.

Looking ahead

The change to Stanford Microsoft 365 is an important next step in modernizing the university's login and authentication experience, but not the last. Our goal is to provide a convenient single login experience that ensures the appropriate security measures are in place for all your compliant devices, no matter which Stanford service you are accessing.
