Changes to Google Cloud Platform Access
Under the Cardinal Cloud program, University IT (UIT) offers Google Cloud Platform (GCP) as a cloud infrastructure technology solution for the Stanford community. To improve cloud security by directly associating account holders to our campus directory, UIT is offering a free Stanford Google Workspace ID to external collaborators.
Staff, students, and faculty already have a Google Workspace ID—it’s how we in the university access Google Drive, Google Docs, and other Google apps. Additionally, anyone with a full-sponsored (paid) SUNet ID has a Stanford Google Workspace ID.
Now, people with base (free) SUNet ID can request a Google Workspace ID to use when logging into GCP. Rather than using a personal Gmail account, using a Stanford Google Workspace ID will help associate the login to the external collaborator.
By tying a Workspace ID with a SUNet ID sponsorship, GCP admins and project owners can confidently manage groups of roles and permissions, knowing every member is directly connected to Stanford.
Stanford Google Workspace IDs for Base SUNet IDs
To request a free Stanford Google Workspace ID, please submit a Help request. Don’t have a SUNet ID? Learn more about free, sponsored base SUNet IDs. Once collaborators are assigned a role in a GCP project, they can log in and begin work. They can also be added to Stanford workgroups using Workgroup Manager, which synchronizes with Google Cloud.
Keep in mind, this new ID doesn’t include the Google Workspace tools (Docs, Drive, Sheets, etc.).
