Unlock the Future of Development with Cardinal Cloud GitHub
Get ready to explore a more secure, easier way to collaborate and innovate with GitHub users in the Stanford community and beyond.
This fall, University IT (UIT) is launching Cardinal Cloud GitHub, an enterprise offering of the software development platform used for version control and collaboration. Best of all, Cardinal Cloud GitHub is free to all faculty, students, and staff with a SUNet ID.
Joining a Stanford GitHub organization means you get access to benefits not available with a public account, including:
- Access to dedicated enterprise support
- Increased package storage and GitHub Actions minutes per month
- Automatic membership synchronization between GitHub Teams and Stanford's Workgroup Manager
- Enterprise Service Level Agreement (SLA) for 99.9% availability
- Additional security scanning for embedded secrets, vulnerable code, and dependencies
GitHub vs GitLab
Stanford’s GitLab remains the recommended code repository service and will still be offered, allowing you to choose the option that works best for you. When choosing between GitLab and GitHub, consider your specific needs and the features each offers. Both are powerful but have different strengths.
- GitLab is ideal for teams looking for an all-in-one DevOps platform, advanced CI/CD capabilities, self-hosting options, and a comprehensive application lifecycle management tool.
- GitHub is best for those who prioritize community collaboration, ease of use, extensive third-party integrations, and familiarity, especially in open-source or smaller team environments.
What’s next?
Software development for Cardinal Cloud GitHub is currently in progress, with user acceptance testing planned for September 2024. Upon successful completion of testing, the service will be live and available for users to access by logging in with their SUNet ID and password.
