Stronger, More Resilient Cellular Coverage—Built with You, for You

You told us where you needed better cell service, and we got to work. Based on your feedback in the 2024 IT Client Satisfaction Survey, we’ve improved the cellular network across campus working with major carriers and their partners. This means you’ll see:

  • Stronger service indoors and out
  • More reliable connections for safety operations and emergencies
  • Faster, more consistent performance across campus
  • An upgraded cellular backbone for better performance

Here’s what we achieved in 2025:

  • Keeping campus connected when it matters most
    • Improved indoor coverage for critical safety and emergency operations, including Department of Public Safety (DPS), Stanford University Fire Marshal's Office (SUFMO), Emergency Operations Center (EOC), and Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S)
    • Enhanced coverage in three underground garages—Roble, Manzanita, and Thoburn—and several administrative buildings (Office of General Counsel (OGC); 408 Panama; 780, 800, and 801 Welch Road; and the Littlefield Center
    • Boosted coverage at the Arrillaga Family Dining Commons
  • Building resilience for emergencies
    • Extended generator power to eight Radio Access Networks (RANs) to ensure continuous outdoor coverage during extended power outages, including all four outdoor R&DE rally points
    • Delivered Stanford Cellular on Light-Truck (COLT) for emergency use
  • Upgrading the backbone for better performance
    • Built a new cellular headend at East Electronic Communications Hub (EOC) and optimized fiber infrastructure at 25 RAN sites
    • Conducted campus-wide outdoor signal surveys and more than 90 indoor surveys to comprehensively assess coverage
    • Advanced mobile technology initiatives to replace end-of-life solutions, expand the private cellular trial, and build a secure, resilient network

What’s next in 2026

This year, we remain committed to the security and resilience of the campus cellular network.
Here’s what we have planned:

  • Improve indoor coverage in the Central Energy Center (CEF), CEF Trailers, Munger Graduate Residences, the basement of Crothers Hall, Knight Garage, DPS Garage, Bass Biology, Encina Hall, Li-Ka Shing Center, and Vaden Clinic
  • Upgrade infrastructure and expand the 5G private network trial to enhance campus-wide cellular reliability

Thanks to everyone who shared their thoughts on cellular coverage in our 2024 IT Client Satisfaction Survey. As we look toward the future, please continue sharing your feedback as we strive to maintain an efficient and reliable cellular infrastructure across campus.
