Jabber Softphone Users Should Upgrade to Newest Version

Friday, September 18, 2020

Due to a security vulnerability, University IT is requesting that all Jabber users upgrade their Jabber application to version 12.9.1.

What you need to do

Many Stanford-owned computers running Jabber are managed by UIT’s Endpoint Configuration Management (aka BigFix) service. This service will automatically update your Jabber client in the coming days. Check what version of Jabber you are running.  If it is earlier than 12.9.1, UIT recommends you not wait for the automatic upgrade, but take action immediately to eliminate this security concern. Follow the instructions below.

Note: Some users who previously installed 12.9.1 reported that their voicemail link was no longer available. This issue has been corrected and should not affect future installs. If you have already installed 12.9.1 and do not see your voicemail link, log out of the Jabber application and then log back in. Your voicemail link will return.

Begin by launching the Jabber application. If it is already active, you’ll need to quit and restart or log out and then log back in.

  • Windows users: You will be presented with an option to update. Click Install the update.

  • Mac Users: After logging back in, you must manually select Check for Updates under the Jabber menu tab, and follow the instructions to complete the upgrade.
