From STARS to Cedar: New Learning Management System Launches in December

A new learning experience is on the horizon: On Dec. 8, 2026, Cedar will replace the current Stanford Training and Registration System (STARS) as Stanford's learning management system.

The retirement of STARS, alongside PeopleSoft HR, is part of the university's 10-year Renew-Extend-Replace (RER) program.

What to expect from Cedar

Cedar will introduce a new learning experience designed to make it easier to find, complete, and manage training. The Dec. 8 launch will deliver new capabilities with more features to be introduced in future releases.

Key features include:

• Enhanced search functionality: Find courses and learning resources quickly.
• Progress dashboards: Easily see your training progress, upcoming requirements, and completed courses.
• Simplified navigation: Access learning resources through a more intuitive, user-friendly interface.
• Auto-assignment: Support training requirements with automated course assignments.

All of the core functionality available in STARS today will be available in Cedar. While the learning experience will change, Cedar will continue to support the university's existing training requirements, STAP eligibility, and compliance obligations.

Complete in-progress training in STARS

If you've started a training course in STARS, plan to complete it by Dec. 4, 2026. In-progress training will not carry over to Cedar, so any unfinished courses will require you to start over after the transition. Your history of completed training will be brought into Cedar or available through reports.
