Get ready to see an updated look for Axess (axess.stanford.edu) this August. Planned updates will enhance the visual and technical experience of the portal for all users, which includes everyone who teaches, learns, or works at Stanford.
Why the change?
The current Axess portal was last updated in 2013—a technical lifetime ago! In 2020, University IT conducted an assessment to identify opportunities to modernize the portal and enhance its user experience. This assessment resulted in recommendations to:
- Create a new look and feel
- Simplify portal navigation
- Modernize how the site works overall
The Axess Refresh project launched in Autumn 2021 to address these recommendations. In addition to a visual refresh, the project involves a set of technical updates to the underlying PeopleSoft system that will bring Stanford’s student and HR systems up to date.
Overall, the project goal is to make Axess more user-friendly now and more adaptable for the future.

The project development team is currently wrapping up technical work. User testing begins in late June, with a planned go-live date for Tuesday, Aug. 9. Switching to the updated portal will require three days of downtime during a maintenance weekend and the following Monday.
