University IT Partners with NPower to Hire Veterans

Thursday, December 1, 2016

Just in time for Veterans Day last month, University IT (UIT) partnered with a national organization to hire five veterans for a three-month internship program.

The organization, called NPower, mobilizes the tech community and provides individuals opportunities to build tech skills and achieve their potential.

Specifically, NPower helps military veterans through its Veterans Programs, by providing free technology and professional training, mentoring, paid apprenticeships, career development workshops, industry-recognized certifications, and employment and alumni services.

On Nov. 3, NPower students, many of which are veterans, visited Stanford to meet with the UIT ServiceNow project team.

Stanford hires veterans

In early November, 30 students from NPower’s ITIL, ServiceNow, and CompTIA A+Certification training programs visited Stanford for a field trip and lunch to meet the UIT ServiceNow project team and learn about the ServiceNow initiative that’s launching Dec. 5.

Following this field trip, six students from NPower’s 8-week training program in ITIL and ServiceNow were invited to join the ServiceNow project team for a three-month internship program to gain real world experience and master the skills they’ve learned in their program. Five of the six students are veterans.

A promising partnership

Leaders from both UIT and NPower are enthusiastic about the new partnership and hope it’s the start of a long-term arrangement between NPower and Stanford University to mutually benefit our community, especially our veterans, to achieve their potential in the technology world.

“University IT is excited to initiate a partnership with NPower on the ServiceNow project,” said Ganesh Karkala, Associate Vice President for Administrative Systems in UIT. “Our goal over the next few years will be to extend this relationship across a broader technology footprint throughout UIT.”

Bill Clebsch, Associate Vice President for IT Services in UIT added, “NPower offers veterans great opportunities and increases UIT’s ability to work with and hire aspiring talent.”

Dann Bergman, NPower Regional Director, is also pleased to be working with Stanford.

“Stanford has hired veteran apprentices from our technology training program and we look forward to continuing with this mutually rewarding partnership,” he said. “We are delighted that such a great education institution has aligned with NPower to provide our veterans with a pathway to careers in IT.”
