Surf the Web More Securely With New Wireless Network

On April 29, University IT delivered another tool to help make your computing more secure.  "Stanford Secure," a new Wi-Fi network option, is now available across campus.  

There are two key differences between the new "Stanford Secure" and the existing "Stanford" wireless networks: The new option encrypts the connection from your device to the Wireless Access Point, making it harder for nearby wireless users to intercept your data. The new network also requires secure authentication and is only accessible to people with a fully sponsored SUNet ID. You can use the new network with any device with which you have been using other Stanford Wi-Fi networks.  

You must download and install an 802.1x certificate via a tool called XpressConnect by Cloudpath, which will also configure your network settings. The certificates last for one year, at which point you'll be sent an email to let you know that you need a new certificate. To download a certificate, go to https://stanfordsecure.stanford.edu/ and click on the Stanford Secure wireless link.  

This past October, the University IT networking team and our support teams — Computer Resource Consulting (CRC), Help Desk, and the IT Operations Center (ITOC) — began testing a more secure Wi-Fi network alternative.  In March, testing was expanded more broadly across the campus. During the testing period, we continually optimized the network to improve performance.

Please note that University IT is not making any changes to the other existing wireless environments at this time (Stanford, Stanford Visitor, eduroam, and Residences).
