Stanford Power Issues

Wednesday, October 24, 2018

6:30 AM: LBRE has restored power to all locations except the Bass Biology building (currently unoccupied), which will likely be without power throughout the day.  UIT services in all other buildings are stable. If you have any issues with a UIT service, please call 725-HELP or submit a help request.

7:30 PM: LBRE has restored power to all locations except those fed by a particular circuit: 401 Quarry, Anderson, Roth Garage, Mudd, Stauffer 1 & 2, Gilbert, CIS, Chem conference, and portions of RAF2. They will be working through the night to isolate the faulty section of that circuit and restore service to additional buildings. LBRE estimates this work will take eight to ten hours and will not have an additional update until approximately 6:00 AM.

UIT is actively checking its services in those building in which LBRE has restored power to insure they are stable.

The next update will be Thursday morning between 6:00 and 7:00 AM.

6:45 PM: LBRE has restored power to many locations. UIT is checking its services in those building to insure service is stable. LBRE continues to work to restore service to the remaining buildings still without power — including Anderson, Roth garage, Mudd, Stauffer, Gilbert, CIS, Chem Conference and 401 Quarry — and expects to have an update at 7:30 PM. Updates to follow. Additional updates, including affected areas, may be available at emergency.stanford.edu.

5:30 PM: LBRE continues to inspecting power circuits and restore service through those working, but has not yet found the circuit that created the initial outage. There is no definitive estimate for when power will be completely restored. Stanford reports that:

  • classes and events in building that have lost power have been cancelled
  • street lights should continue to work normally.

Next update from LBRE is expected at 7:30 PM.

See below for impact to UIT services. Updates to follow. Additional updates, including affected areas, may be available at emergency.stanford.edu.

5:15 PM: LBRE is continuing the process of restoring power. Estimate remains the same. In buildings where power is lost there may be some impact to UIT services, including:

  • some phones are not useable (i.e., cannot place or receive calls)
  • wired and wireless networking may be unavailable
  • access to buildings using the Stanford ID Card Access Control System may be unavailable and the building may lock down as backup power is exhausted
  • local servers without backup power may be unavailable

Service in buildings that have not lost power remain stable.

Updates to UIT services to follow. Additional updates, including affected areas, may be available at emergency.stanford.edu.

4:30 PM: LBRE engineers are continuing the process of restoring power and estimate it will take about four hours. UIT services remain stable but may start experiencing impacts as UIT backup power is exhausted. Stanford is instructing lab researchers in buildings that have lost power, to cease work with hazardous materials and leave and secure the lab. Updates to follow. Additional updates, including affected areas, may be available at emergency.stanford.edu.

3:45 PM: LBRE engineers are in the process of restoring power but do not have an estimate of when service will be fully restored. Some UIT service may start experiencing impacts as UIT backup power is exhausted, including some voice services. Updates to follow.

3:15 PM: Stanford is currently experiencing power issues.  Lands, Buildings, and Real Estate (LBRE) is currently working to restore service. Some UIT services are on backup power, but there are currently no UIT service outages. As backup power is exhausted, some service may be affected. Updates to follow.
