New Year, New Way to Print

Cardinal Print Program rolls out in the Redwood City campus in March
Friday, November 9, 2018

When staff move to the new Stanford Redwood City campus starting in March 2019, they will find the print experience a little different, thanks to Stanford’s new Cardinal Print program. The program will be available in 2019, with the Stanford Redwood City campus as an early adopter.

Cardinal Print is a managed print services program, providing everything you need to print quickly and easily. A single vendor maintains and provides supplies for all multi-function devices in the program.

“The Cardinal Print program will help us replace outdated printers and expand our modern print capabilities, such as secure printing and mobile printing,” said Kathy Chea, Director of Strategic Business Relationships for Procurement Services. “This improved print service is also more environmentally friendly and will be under one contract, helping us reduce Stanford’s carbon footprint and manage our printing costs.”

A better user experience

Because it is centrally managed, the Cardinal Print program makes printing, scanning, faxing, and copying on the multi-function devices more secure and efficient.

For example, when you send a document to print, it is held in Cardinal Print’s print queue. You can go to any printer in the program, swipe your badge or enter your SUNet ID and password for authentication, then securely print the document.

With Cardinal Print, you can also:

  • Send a document to print from a mobile device
  • Scan a document and email it at the printer
  • Review and manage your print queue online or at the printer

Environmental benefits and cost savings

The Cardinal Print program benefits the environment by reducing the number of printers, particularly resource-intensive inkjet printers that are commonly used on campus. It also saves money and administrative resources by consolidating and standardizing printing equipment, purchases, and support agreements.

The program is a partnership between Financial Management Services (FMS) and University IT (UIT), and part of a larger Business Affairs spend management initiative to increase efficiencies, improve the user experience, and save money.
