Cisco Jabber Coming to Stanford

Wednesday, July 1, 2015

University IT is working on deploying the next generation of instant messaging and collaboration tools. Currently, we offer an XMPP Instant Messaging service, which allows you to message using the third-party Adium (for Macintosh) and Pidgin (for Windows) applications.

Cisco Jabber is a fully integrated application, which leverages the same Cisco technology and directory service that University IT uses with the VoIP desk phone system. There are applications available for Macintosh, Windows, iOS, and Android.

A significant feature of the Cisco Jabber service, called Presence, allows users to easily and securely determine if a person is available. Other features provided include instant messaging, voice calls, video calls, and screen sharing.

University IT is piloting this technology with a few departments and is planning to expand it to Stanford University and Stanford Medicine clients during the summer and fall of 2015.
