SDS Technician Workflow

As an IT professional, your Stanford Device Setup (SDS) experience includes a Technician workflow option. This allows you to control the device build method. In addition, during the initial rollout, you may opt to have your designated users participate in the complete SDS setup experience.

The IT Technician Setup Screen

When SDS detects that a device is assigned to a member of Stanford IT, the standard setup pauses and displays a Stanford Device Setup - IT Technician prompt.

You will be asked: "How would you like to set up this device?" You must select one of the following Build Methods from the dropdown menu:

  • Self: Select this if the device is for your use. This method will automatically install standard Apps and Configs and auto-launch Stanford Device Registration (SDR).
  • Someone Else: Select this if you are setting the device up for someone else. This method also installs Apps and Configs and auto-launches SDR.
  • Lab/Shared Device: Select this if the device is for shared use. This method skips the standard Apps and Configs and does not auto-launch SDR.

Select your preferred method and click OK to proceed.

How to Opt Users into the Complete Workflow

By default, standard users experience a shortened version of the setup. To ensure your end users receive the full, automated SDS setup experience, you must opt them in using Stanford's workgroup system.

Follow these steps to opt users in:

  1. Submit a Request: Create a Help request to add a specific workgroup you manage to be nested within the primary SDS workgroup.
  2. Manage Your Workgroup: Once the workgroup has been nested, you control who gets the full experience. Simply add the relevant users to your managed workgroup.
  3. The End User Experience: When enrolled users log in to their Stanford macOS device, they will automatically be guided through the full SDS workflow. This includes the automated installation of commonly used apps, the Cardinal Key installation prompt, and Stanford Device Registration (SDR).

(Note: You can view the full step-by-step user experience in the macOS User Guide.)
