Wallet Pass Apple iOS Testing Instructions

Thank you for volunteering to pilot and test Mobile Access in Apple Wallet. This is referred to as Wallet Pass in these instructions. Wallet Passes will eventually replace Mobile Key as the preferred method for accessing buildings and utilizing services, such as Cardinal Print.

Wallet Passes will NOT serve as a digital university identification card. The Mobile ID within the Stanford Mobile application will remain the only approved digital university ID.

More details about the Wallet Pass release will be available at a later date.

Important Notes

  • Apple and Google Wallet features for Stanford Mobile are subject to an NDA. Test volunteers should refrain from discussing this test and keep wallet-related information confidential.
  • iOS testers can submit feedback directly to Krystal Kelley (knkelley@stanford.edu) and Jamie Tsui (tsui@stanford.edu).
  • Wallet Pass is NOT a Mobile ID and does not serve as a “University ID”. The Mobile ID (Me screen) in Stanford Mobile is the only acceptable digital form of a University ID. A Wallet Pass is for card reader access only.
  • This initial pilot grants access to Polya, Forsythe, and Pine.
  • Testers are permitted to keep the Wallet Pass after the testing period, and prior to the official release.
    • Testers may not revert to using Mobile Key after migrating to a Wallet Pass.
  • A Wallet Pass is not Bluetooth-enabled; it uses near field communication (NFC), which is a close-range communication. Presenting your mobile device within a couple of inches of the reader is required.
  • By default, an Apple Wallet Pass comes with “Express Mode” turned on, which allows users to tap their Wallet Pass on readers without having their phone unlocked or even the Apple Wallet app in the foreground.

Known issues

  • “Learn more” links point to Mobile Key webpages - these will be replaced with Wallet Pass web pages at a later date.
  • Back of Wallet Pass says “Student ID” and “Student Information” - this will eventually be renamed.
  • Back of Wallet Pass shows “Start Date” - this field will eventually be either renamed or removed.

Apple iOS Wallet Pass Testing Instructions

Phases and testingInstructions and notes
Before testing

Conduct the following steps prior to starting the testing process:

  1. Carry a physical ID during testing in case you are unable to access buildings or services via the Wallet Pass.
  2. Ensure the TestFlight app is installed on your device. Then sign in to the TestFlight application with the Apple ID email you shared for access to Stanford Mobile 11.0.0 TestFlight builds, or if you are already signed into TestFlight, make sure you are signed in with the Apple ID you provided for the pilot program.
  3. You should see Stanford Mobile listed under Apps for testing. Tap “Update” to download the Stanford Mobile 11.0.0 (x) TestFlight build. If you are already on the latest version of the TestFlight build, you will see the option to “Open” the app.
Test 1: Logging in to the Stanford Mobile
application
  1. Open the Stanford Mobile app.
  2. Tap on “Me” in the lower right corner within the Stanford Mobile bottom navigation bar to go to the Me screen.
    1. If you’re not already signed in, sign in to Stanford Mobile.
    2. If you’re already signed in, you will see your Mobile ID.
  3. On the Me screen, tap the Open Settings gear icon in the top-right corner of your device.
  4. Review your Check Wallet Pass Status: Ensure the Wallet Pass status is set to  "Eligible."
  5. If the status is not "Eligible," please contact Krystal Kelley (knkelley@stanford.edu) and Jamie Tsui (tsui@stanford.edu), with the Development team for assistance.
Test 2: Wallet Pass provisioning instructions
  1. Go back to the Me screen on Stanford Mobile.
  2. Confirm that the "Add to Wallet" button is present.
  3. Tap the "Add to Wallet" button.
  4. Optional: Tap "Learn More" to learn more. This will lead you to a placeholder page.
  5. Tap the “X” in the top left corner to close the web page.
  6. Review the consent instructions and then tap "I Agree" on the consent page to proceed with activating Wallet Pass.
    1. Note that if you have an existing Mobile Key, it will be removed after the Wallet Pass activation process completes, and you will then have only a Wallet Pass.
    2. Unlike Mobile Key, Wallet Pass will provide only tap-on-reader functionality. There will no longer be a “Tap to Unlock” button in Stanford Mobile to activate card readers from a distance. If you need to invoke readers from a distance (for accessibility or garage gate readers), you will need to contact the card office for an alternative.
  7. The provisioning process will begin, and you will automatically proceed through the activation steps.
  8. Once all steps are complete, tap "Read more about Wallet Pass usage" (this link will eventually redirect to the Wallet Pass homepage).
    1. Tap the “X” in the top left corner again to close the web page.
  9. Tap "Next" to continue. Your Apple Wallet app will open.
  10. Tap "Add" to add the pass to your Apple Wallet.
  11. Review the notes about how Express Mode works, then tap "Done" to complete adding your pass to your Apple Wallet app.
    1. If you previously had a Mobile Key, it has now been removed.
    2. Note that it may take several minutes for your access levels to finish adding to your Wallet Pass, after which your Wallet Pass will work on card readers.
    3. There should NOT be any error messages displayed, such as: "Unable to set up Apple Pay" or "Card already in wallet". If you get an error message, please contact Krystal Kelley (knkelley@stanford.edu) and Jamie Tsui (tsui@stanford.edu), with the Development team for assistance.
Validation: expected results
  1. Return to the Me screen on the Stanford Mobile app.
  2. Tap "View in Wallet" to view your Wallet Pass in the Apple Wallet app, with your name on the front.
  3. Tap the "i" icon in the top right corner to view the back of the pass. TBD what the back of the pass information will contain; it is currently changing.
  4. Return to the Stanford Mobile app, go to the Me screen, then tap the Settings gear icon.
  5. Ensure that your Wallet Pass Status now shows as "Active" (it may take a few minutes for it to change from “Eligible” to “Active” after you finish adding your pass to Apple Wallet).
  6. If you had Mobile Key before, the Mobile Key fields are no longer visible (e.g., Mobile Key Status, How to use Mobile Key, etc.).
  7. You will now see “How to use Wallet Pass” and “Wallet Pass FAQ” links on the Settings screen. These web pages are not ready yet. Tap on these links to open more information about Wallet Pass on a web page.
  8. Tap the “X” in the top left corner to close the web page.
  9. On Settings, tap "Certifications" to view the software details and confirm:
    1. The HID SDK version is 3.5.2 or higher.
    2. That you have a Wallet badge ID.
  • Test 3: Performance checks
  • Test the Wallet Pass functionality at the following pilot phase buildings by tapping at readers for entries you should have access to: Polya, Pine, and Forsythe. Note that the pass is not confirmed to work at other locations, but may function incidentally.
  • If Express Mode is enabled, the wallet pass will work in the background even if your phone is locked or the screen is turned off. (Apple has more information about Express Mode here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/105123)
  • If Express Mode is turned off, the Wallet Pass will not work in the background and must be displayed on-screen through the Apple Wallet app to be used.

Please do not remove the Wallet Pass during troubleshooting, as we will eventually introduce an activation limit to prevent excessive Wallet Pass activations. Once the activation limit is reached, you will not be able to activate Wallet Pass on any device for at least 30 days.

If you experience any issues during the test, please contact Krystal Kelley (knkelley@stanford.edu) and Jamie Tsui (tsui@stanford.edu) with the Development team for assistance.
