Unity Voicemail Pilot for Communications Services

On May 15, University IT will roll out a pilot of the Unity Voicemail system within Communications Services, in preparation for a September 10 voicemail rollout across Stanford University, Stanford Health Care, and Stanford Children's Health. The Cisco Unity Platform will replace the current Movius platform to align voicemail with Stanford's Cisco telephony platform and create a more unified communication experience.

What is changing?

All the voicemail features you currently use, such as your voicemail notification options, will be available on the new Cisco Unity system. Your current voicemail greeting will automatically be moved to the new system.

Because we are switching voicemail providers, however, your user experience will change slightly. The changes include:

  • Your voicemail access number. If you dial in to access your voicemail, you will use a different phone number and PIN. Your voicemail administrator will provide these numbers before the migration.
  • Your saved voicemail messages. Voicemail messages saved in the old system will not be moved to Cisco Unity.
  • The keypad numbers used to access voicemail. Many of the keypad numbers used to manage voicemail will change.
  • Terms used to describe voicemail features. The new system uses different words to describe a few voicemail features.
What do I need to do now?
  • Review your saved voicemail messages. Voicemail messages saved on the current system will not be moved to Cisco Unity. Review your saved messages and note any information from the messages that you need to record. If you want to keep the audio version of a voicemail message, play it and record it on another device such as a smartphone.
If you need to retrieve a saved voicemail message from the current system that you did not record, you must request a copy. Saved voicemail messages will be archived for at least 60 days after the migration.
  • Review the new Cisco Unity instructions before the migration. Review the instructions on this page to learn how to set up and use the new voicemail system.
How do I set up and use Cisco Unity?

How to set up your Cisco Unity voicemail

The first step is to enroll as a user. Enrollment lets you record your name, change your greeting (if you choose), and change your temporary PIN.

Before you start: Make sure you have your Stanford phone number (which will be your voicemail ID number) and your temporary PIN.

Follow these steps to enroll:

  1. Dial the access number (available from your voicemail administrator) to reach voicemail.
  2. Press * (star key).
  3. Follow the voice prompts to enroll.

Once you are enrolled, you can start using voicemail.

To reach voicemail from a Stanford University line:

  2. The system asks for your PIN. Enter the number, then press # (pound key).
  3. Follow the voice prompts to manage your voicemail.

To reach voicemail from outside of Stanford:

  1. Dial your external access number.
  2. Press * (star key).

  5. Follow the voice prompts to manage your voicemail.
