Help me choose my new Microsoft login

Your new Microsoft login requires a secure authentication method. All three options provide strong protection. The best choice depends on whether you prefer using your phone, your Apple device features, or a physical security key.

Microsoft Authenticator App

  • Suitable for: Most people, especially if you already comfortable with the Duo app and use your phone regularly
  • You'll need: A smartphone (iOS or Android)
  • How it works: Approve login requests with by entering a two-digit code on your phone
  • Pros: Works for all device types
  • Cons: Requires your phone to be charged and nearby

Apple Passkey

  • Suitable for: iPhone, iPad, or Mac users who want the simplest experience
  • You'll need: An Apple device with Touch ID or Face ID
  • How it works: Use biometrics to sign in
  • Pros: Seamless on Apple devices, no separate app needed
  • Cons: Only works within the Apple ecosystem

YubiKey

  • Suitable for: Those who already have a YubiKey and are comfortable using it; those who don’t have a smart phone that can run Microsoft Authenticator
  • You'll need: To purchase a YubiKey ($25-$50)
  • How it works: Insert the physical key and tap it when prompted
  • Pros: Works without a phone, simple login experience
  • Cons: Costs money, you must carry it with you, can be lost
