Upcoming Changes to shared web servers
University IT is performing security updates to the shared web servers (i.e., proxy servers, WWW and web.stanford.edu, and Vanity URLs).
The current service uses older security protocols known to be susceptible to online attacks. To minimize the associated risk, University IT will upgrade the shared web servers to improve their overall security by introducing a higher level of data encryption.
When will the change occur?
- Proxy servers: Jan. 12, 2017, at 5 a.m.
This will affect vanity URLs handled by these servers. - www.stanford.edu and web.stanford.edu: Jan. 14, 2017, at 7 a.m.
This will affect the remainder of websites hosted on the central web servers (whether they use a vanity URL or not).
How might this impact your clients or you?
Your clients and you will only be impacted by the change if you are running a significantly older version of a web browser that you will need to upgrade. These are required versions of popular browsers:
- Chrome, v. 33 or later (latest version is 55)
- Firefox, v. 34 or later (latest version is 50)
- Internet Explorer 11 or later
- Safari 7 or later (latest version is 10)
Older browsers will display errors indicating the website cannot be reached.
Most browsers have a menu item that displays the version you are currently using.
What should your clients or you do if you need to upgrade?
