Upgrade to Windows 10 by January 2020

Thursday, December 5, 2019

After January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support for computers running Windows 7 (see https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/windows/end-of-windows-7-support).

To ensure that Stanford systems remain secure and well supported, all Windows 7 computers used for Stanford activities should be upgraded to Windows 10 by January 2020.

Weekly reminders starting in November

Users of Windows 7 computers began receiving weekly upgrade notifications on November 14, 2019. Any Windows 7 computers remaining on January 16, 2020 will be restricted from using Stanford's network.

Exceptions may be requested for computers that directly control scientific research equipment and cannot be upgraded due to specialized software that is unavailable on a supported operating system (see https://minsec-exception.stanford.edu).

If you need assistance upgrading, contact your local IT support team.
