Tableau Desktop - Intermediate (4-day class)

Technology Training is pleased to offer a new series of Tableau Desktop training courses designed to help you leverage the full power of Tableau Desktop against use cases relevant to Stanford.

Prerequisites:

A good understanding of Tableau Desktop and its features, hands-on working experience as a Tableau developer for 2-3 months, a thorough understanding of Fundamentals concepts, or having attended and retained the knowledge learned in the Tableau Desktop Beginner course.

Being able to do the following:

  • Compare multiple metrics in a single chart
  • Differentiate Dimensions and Measures on Tableau
  • Differentiate between Blue and Green fields on Tableau
  • Know some of the most widely used visualizations in Tableau
  • Build a Dashboard
  • Save workbooks on Tableau Desktop
  • Know the importance of a Tableau Server
  • Distribute (or share) Tableau work with developers and end users
  • Know why and how to improve performance of the Dashboard
  • Know the differences between Calculations and Table Calculations and when to use them
  • Identify outliers and look for data anomalies (Not Tableau specific)

Topics to be covered include:

  • Review of Fundamentals: Basic Stacked Bar, Side by Side Bar, Highlight table, Date features and Basic filters
  • Advanced Calculations: Conditional Statements, KPI chart
  • Advanced Table Calculations: Running total, Percent of Total, Rank, Partitioning & Addressing
  • Parameters: End User Controls
  • Tableau Data Extracts
  • Multiple Data Sources -- Joins: Combine Multiple tables based on a common field
  • Multiple Data Sources -- Unions: Append multiple tables to get a columnar data set
  • Multiple Data Sources -- Blends: Using multiple datasets with different levels of granularity where Joins fail
  • Distributions: Box Plots, Jitter Plots, and Bullet Graphs
  • Advanced Filters: Global Filter, Relevant Filter, Context Filter and Rank Filter
  • Interactive Dashboard:
    • Arrange 3 visualizations and provide interactions through Filters and Dashboard Actions
    • Understanding Layout Containers
    • Navigation and Device Specific Design
