SQL Essentials

The volume of data being generated is astonishing in its own right, what is truly mind-boggling is that we have only just started to make use of it all. It is estimated that only half of a percent of all data collected is ever analyzed.  
 

Goal / Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the database structure
  • Launch and open a database in SQL Lite
  • Understand the SQL query basics
  • Review various SQL functions
  • Use comparison, logical and arithmetic operators in SQL
  • Understand how to work with multiple tables using SQL joins

Topics Outline:

  • SQL Terminology & Elements of Relational Databases
  • Types of data
  • SELECT statement
  • Install SQLite
  • Orientation of the SQLite environment
  • Queries -- comments, structure of a basic query, syntax and using the ORDER BY clause
  • Comparison, logical and arithmetic operators
  • Use the WHERE, LIKE, DATE(), AND, OR and CASE statements
  • Understand Joins and how they interact with Relational Database Structure
  • Use a Left Outer Join in SQLite
  • Types of functions in SQL and add calculations
  • Aggregate functions and nesting functions -- Use the ROUND() functions with GROUP BY, WHERE, and HAVING clauses
