New Web Application Promotes Reuse at Stanford

Thursday, May 18, 2017

No room for that old filing cabinet? Upgrading your printer and wondering what to do with the old model?

Thanks to a new web application developed by University IT (UIT), there is a solution for you and other staff and faculty at Stanford who are facing these same predicaments.

The UIT Research Administration team recently partnered with the Property Management Office to build reuse.stanford.edu. ReUse, which went live on March 11, promotes efficiency through reuse across campus.

ReUse enables faculty and staff to advertise office furniture, supplies, and equipment that are in operable condition but no longer needed, for potential re-utilization by all university departments. This helps minimize unnecessary expenditures or duplicate purchases and maximize long-term use of the items. It’s also one small step towards sustainability through the reduction of landfill.

Users can search and make no-fee acquisitions of used items, post ads for unwanted or unneeded items in usable condition, or alternatively post ‘wanted’ ads for items.

“We have been looking forward to a new ReUse app, and I believe UIT developed something really special,” said Stann Dunn, associate director in the Property Management Office. “It is easy to use, and we think it will go a long way in maximizing the utilization of equipment, furniture, and supplies at Stanford, reducing landfill and increasing our return on investment.”
