Efficient Operations Yield Stable Service Rates

For the second year in a row, rates will remain largely unchanged in fiscal year 2017 for services University IT provides to university departments and organizations.

Through a sharp focus on operational improvements and service delivery efficiencies, we are able to hold rates at their current levels for nearly all of our more than 80 technology services in the coming fiscal year beginning Sept. 1, 2016.

This marks the second consecutive year of ensuring that we provide the highest value services to the university with almost no increases in cost. Only our systems administration rates will rise modestly. In addition, our virtual server rates will be restructured in FY17, resulting in decreases for most clients.

Many factors impact the rates we charge, causing increases or decreases accordingly. These factors include:

• Advances in technology
• The demand for and use of our services
• Annual staff salary increases
• Licensing and software subscription fees
• Operational improvements such as automation

In reviewing these factors this year, we found ways to offset those resulting in increased expenses, most notably salary increases, by reducing non-salary expenses in other areas.

Looking ahead

While holding most of our rates stable in FY16 and FY17 is an achievement for which we are proud, it is unlikely we can sustain the trend for a third year.

Like most organizations, staff compensation is a significant component of our cost base, and though we have been able to offset past increases, we currently expect service rates to increase in FY18.
